European Lighthouses

Lighthouses mean different things to different people. Some people see lighthouses as romantic symbols or powerful iconic images. For mariners, lighthouses were a sign of danger. Lighthouses were often built after many shipwrecks occurred in the area. By ensuring the safe passage of sea vessels, lighthouses contributed to the development of commerce in Europe as well as the United States.

When I visited the United Kingdom, I traveled to London's only lighthouse. Lighthouses in the UK are managed by Trinity House. The lighthouse I visited, Trinity or Bowcreek Lighthouse was once a Training Station for Lightkeepers. While there I discovered a lightship that had been converted into a music studio.

During my search online for lighthouse tours in London, I discovered John Eagles lighthouse tours of Ireland. I toured the Emerald Isle along the Wild Atlantic Way and visited breathtaking lighthouses.

Lightships guard the harbor and are often placed where it is not feasible to build a lighthouse. I was delighted and surprised to see this lightship anchored near the Trinity Lighthouse in London. The lightship now serves as music studio called Lightship 95.

The red door, steps and broad base of the Ardglass lighthouse immediately captured my imagination. Located in a quaint fishing town, Ardglass Lighthouse stands at the end of a winding pier. Built in 1887, the lighthouse guards the harbor in solitude.

Completed in 1862, the Blacksod Lighthouse's contribution to D day can't be overstated.
Lightkeeper, Ted Sweeney, unknowingly set the date for the Allies invasion of Normandy. He gave them hourly forecasts. Finally, Sweeney gave a clear forecast for June 6, D day.

I know people have weird perceptions of artists. I never thought I'd feel like a racehorse. I had 5 minutes to draw this lighthouse as it was an unscheduled stop during a tour. The other passengers cheered me on with "Go Elaine, go!" as I was finished the drawing.

Donaghadee Lighthouse, Ireland
99.00 USD

Donaghadee Lighthouse stands alone on a popular harbor near Dublin. There is no keepers house at the lighthouse. That and the etched stripes on the white lighthouse distinguishes it. Established in 1836, the Donaghadee was the first Irish lighthouse to use electricity.

East Rathlin Lighthouse, Ireland

East Rathlin or Altacarry Lighthouse is unique in that it has two beacons. Although one light is now active when they were established in 1856, both were active. The two lights were built to prevent confusion and to distinguish it from nearby lighthouses.

I stood aloof from Oyster Island Lighthouse across the channel at Rosses Point. Gazing at sailboats in front the lighthouse and the mountains behind, I became captivated by the peaceful setting. The lighthouse established in 1893 replaced two previous lighthouses.

St John's Donegal Lighthouse, Ireland

It took a bit of mischief to see this lighthouse. It was difficult to see and sketch the lighthouse balancing on a wall. Not sure why our group couldn't get inside the lighthouse. Established in 1831, the lighthouse is one of the 12 Great Lighthouses of Ireland because it has accommodations.

St John's Point Lighthouse, Ireland

The tallest lighthouse on the Northern Ireland coast is decked with black and yellow bands. The stunning lighthouse was painted its current colors in 1954 and was established in 1844. The lighthouse is one of the 12 Great Lighthouses of Ireland.

Tory Island Lighthouse, Ireland
99.00 USD
( Sales tax and shipping costs not included )

Tory Island, Ireland has the distinction of having a resident, King. Besides greeting visitors, I'm not sure what his official duties are. We caught the ferry met the lightkeeper at Tory Hotel then headed to the Tory Lighthouse.

West Rathlin Lighthouse, Ireland
99.00 USD
( Sales tax and shipping costs not included )

The upside down lighthouse on Rathlin Island in Ireland is a marvel of human ingenuity. Unlike most lighthouses, the Keepers at West Rathlin Lighthouse had to climb down to the light. Because the top cliff was often obscured by fog and low clouds, a traditional lighthouse would not do.
