New England Lighthouses

New England may have some of the shortest lighthouses but its long on history. Fort Constitution where Portland Harbor Lighthouse is located recalls the days of Paul Revere. Reminders of New England's Whaling History are prevalent at Nantucket, the site of the oldest lighthouse. Memories of WWII are present at a shipbuilding museum near Portland Breakwater Lighthouse. Surfside Life Saving Station now a hostel beacons old and youth alike.

Brant Point Lighthouse, Nantucket
99.00 USD
( Sales tax and shipping costs not included )

After painting Florida's towering lighthouses, I was once puzzled by New England's stout lighthouses. But I smiled when seeing Nantucket's little lighthouse. It is New England's shortest lighthouse and the site of America's second oldest lighthouse. The current lighthouse was built in 1901.

(Old) Brant Point Lighthouse, Nantucket
99.00 USD
( Sales tax and shipping costs not included )

I was attracted to this lighthouse because it has no lens. Most people passed by this lighthouse on the way to Brant Point Lighthouse a few steps away. When they paused to look at the old lighthouse after seeing me drawing it, I felt I had achieved my artistic purpose.

Cape Neddick/Nubble Lighthouse
99.00 USD
( Sales tax and shipping costs not included )

I have mixed feelings about drawing lighthouses off shore. Can I really have the true lighthouse experience at a distant shore? In all honesty can I say I visited a lighthouse when my heart but not my feet has touched it grounds?

East Chop Lighthouse, Martha's Vineyard
99.00 USD
( Sales tax and shipping costs not included )

Perched high on a cliff, East Chop Lighthouse is located in a quiet residential area. Surrounded by a grassy area with a picket fence and benches, the idyllic setting belies its noble purpose. The perils offshore inspired a mariner to raise money to privately build the lighthous in 1869.

Edgartown Lighthouse, Martha's Vineyard
99.00 USD
( Sales tax and shipping costs not included )

Edgartown Lighthouse has always served as a symbol of hope. Once located on Crane's Beach, Edgartown Lighthouse replaced a lighthouse that was badly damaged in 1938. Weddings often take place here. A children's memorial located at the lighthouse, offers comfort to loved ones.

Gayhead Lighthouse, Martha's Vineyard
99.00 USD
( Sales tax and shipping costs not included )

The Gay Head Lighthouse & Cliffs in the town of Aquinnah on Martha's Vineyard are so spectacular that they make it to the bucket list. There's a shot of the lighthouse in the movie, "Jaws." I was visiting Martha's Vineyard when they were moving the lighthouse.

Portland Breakwater Light, Maine
99.00 USD
( Sales tax and shipping costs not included )

The Portland Breakwater Lighthouse is unlike any lighthouse I've isited. Inspired by a beautiful Greek monument, it is a magnificent and unique edifice. The lighthouse was built after mariners complained that the breakwater was a navigational hazard.

Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse, New Hampshire
99.00 USD
( Sales tax and shipping costs not included )

New Hampshire has the shortest ocean coastline of any coastal state in the US. We drove through Fort Constitution to view the lighthouse built in 1871. My disappointment in seeing only one lighthouse in New Hampshire turn to delight once I discovered the state has a 13-mile coastline.

Portland Head Lighthouse, Maine
99.00 USD
( Sales tax and shipping costs not included )

Portland Head Lighthouse has many claims to fame. It is purported to be the most photographed lighthouse in the United States. Its popularity may be due to the fact that it is the first lighthouse built by the newly formed government during President George Washington's term of office.

Sankaty Head Lighthouse, Nantucket
99.00 USD
( Sales tax and shipping costs not included )

I knew my journey to Sankaty Lighthouse would be a tedious one. After getting off the second bus, I looked for directional signs to the lighthouse and found none. Thankfully, I a family gave me printed instructions and later I was invited to follow a couple for their daily walk to the lighthouse.

Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse, Maine
99.00 USD
( Sales tax and shipping costs not included )

Spring Point Lighthouse is a caisson or spark plug lighthouse. It stands on a pressurized chamber because it was constructed offshore. Initially painted reddish brown, it was completed in 1897. The breakwater that connects the lighthouse to the shore was completed in 1951.

Surfside Life Saving Station, Nantucket
99.00 USD
( Sales tax and shipping costs not included )

Surfside Life Saving Station was established in 1874. The Life Saving Service is the precursor to today's Coast Guard. It is now a hostel. The lookout where keepers searched for distressed vessels is housed in the female dormitory. I stayed at the hostel during a two day visit to Nantucket.

West Chop Lighthouse, Martha's Vineyard
99.00 USD
( Sales tax and shipping costs not included )

West Chop guards the harbor to Martha's Vineyard. It is the first lighthouse seen from the ferry. The Coast Guard is responsible for the lighthouse which stands behind a white picket fence to ward off visitors. The lighthouse went into service on October 5, 1817.
